Operated by Biocow and costing over £15 million Ellough AD Plant uses a process known as anaerobic digestion to turn locally-grown crops, such as maize, into sustainable gas which is fed directly into the national grid, heating up to 8000 homes.

Alongside the obvious ecological benefits the plant also benefits the local farming community; providing a market for farmers to sell their ‘break crops’ – crops planted by farmers in between other crops to keep the land healthy and fertile.

As a by-product, the anaerobic digestion process also produces a valuable organic fertiliser which can be spead onto farming land.
